Be a Sun Flower (Analogy) by Nicole De Coteau

Updated: May 23

It amazes me how God uses the simple things in life as well as the things we love to speak to our hearts. About a few weeks ago during my morning devotion, God whispered his heart toward me for this season. He simply said Nicole be a sunflower. Let me first be clear in stating that I love sunflowers and that they are my favorite flower. On my desk, I have a bouquet of flowers that include them.

Did I just here to myself be a sunflower? then it hit me. I owned a sunflower I called her sunshine, she died though, I live in the Caribbean and for about 2 weeks straight we had non stop rain and the sun did not shine as bright as it usually did, so my sunflower died. What a sad day that was for me but this is where the revelation Got real. Besides regular watering, the sunflower needs at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight for it to grow and reach its maximum potential, hence the word sunflower. The position a sunflower takes is that of facing the sun constantly. Then I heard again be a sunflower.

Let's go a little deeper, in that moment God compared the position I should take in him this season is that of a sunflower. Just like the sunflower needs to be in direct sunlight for 6 to 8 hours to reach its maximum growth potential, it's the same way we need to be in God's presence so that we can blossom and be fruitful so that we can be all he wants us to be.

John 15 :5 (NIV)

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire, and burned.

Do I mean exactly 6 hours or more? no, I don't the matter of the heart is spending more time with Jesus and making him your priority. Just like my sunflower died after weeks of pressure from the rain and sunlight became the least factor when it should have been a priority, Its the same way we can shrivel up and die spiritually if we don't remain in Gods presence. This year has been a tough one a year every person on the earth will not forget.

My encouragement this morning is to not allow the pressures of life to stop you from chasing after God. All the enemy needs is a loop whole to come in and take you down. I know you get weary, I know you feel alone, I know you may feel like your life is going nowhere, I know this has been the most frustrating season ever. But I want to challenge you to make a stand and let it be on the solid rock which is Jesus Christ.

Find someone you can be accountable to, who will make sure you don't give up and that your moving in the direction God has for you.

1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
